In the heart of the city of San Pedro, the iguana Reserve is flourishing. The green iguana, an endangered reptile species in Belize, numbering more than 200 individuals of its kind, has found refuge among mangroves in the western part of the city. Mr. Calvin was kind and took care of these beautiful creatures and registered this area as a nature reserve called "Eco-Iguana Corner".
The sanctuary is located on the shore of the lagoon, north of the gas station. Head north on Back Street until you reach the Stop sign.
He laid a path between the mangroves where you can see iguanas resting in the trees. You can see different species of birds, and if you're lucky, maybe even two local crocodiles living in the area. There is even an osprey nest, in which BEL kindly provided a pole and lumber to recreate the nest box after they demolished the tower that the Ospreys used for nesting. Mr. Calvin cleans and maintains the area day after day, but people still continue to pollute the environment.
