Click on the Windows icon and type "QuickBooks" in the search field.

Verify your payroll subscription: Ensure that your payroll subscription is active and up to date. You can verify this information by going to the "Employees" menu and selecting "My Payroll Service" and then "Account/Billing Information."


Rename the paysub.ini file: The paysub.ini file stores the QuickBooks payroll update information. Renaming this file forces QuickBooks to create a new one. Follow these steps:

a. Close QuickBooks Desktop.

b. Open the File Explorer on your computer.

c. Navigate to the following location:

For QuickBooks Desktop 2021: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 2021

For QuickBooks Desktop 2020: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 2020

For QuickBooks Desktop 2019: C:\ProgramData\Intuit\QuickBooks 2019

d. Find and right-click the paysub.ini file, then choose "Rename."

e. Add the word ".old" at the end of the file name (e.g., paysub.ini.old).

f. Close the File Explorer and reopen QuickBooks Desktop.

g. Attempt to update the payroll again to see if the error persists.


Repair QuickBooks Desktop installation: Sometimes, a damaged QuickBooks installation can cause errors. You can repair the installation to fix any corrupted files. Follow these steps:

a. Close QuickBooks Desktop.

b. Open the Control Panel on your computer.

c. Go to "Programs" or "Programs and Features."

d. Find and select QuickBooks from the list of installed programs.

e. Click on the "Uninstall/Change" button.
