Possibly installing a test oxwall site | Forum

I really like oxwall.
I'm thinking about installing it at a test site.
Something like "oxtest.mydomain.com"
I'm thinking it can be there and I can test themes and plugins.
And I could use it for giving mini tutorials on things I've accomplished, like, "how did you change the color of the sign-in page?"

If I have the attention of any admins here - is this a good idea or a terrible idea? Suggestions or warnings?

I realize oxwall has it's own demo site but I thought I could focus my test site on how and how well various plugins and themes work and focus the forum on, like I said, mini tutorials on the small things I've managed to do.

It would only be offered as like a "bridge" between this oxwall forum and my test site, assuming I can avoid spammers. And it could be offered to any plugin developers who might need a testing ground.

I'm still "just thinking" about doing this. But imagine the mini tutorials - like, "this is how I put Eddie's 404 error page into my oxwall site."
Stuff like that.

Does anyone have any feedback? Or am I just being silly?

Or... maybe have a board here at this forum be dedicated to mini tutorials - for reference - when answering people's questions. I don't know. I'm just excited to do something useful. It'll come to me. I will be... stronger... faster... better than the average ox... Cue the soundtrack. Here comes Super Bobby.

Quote from Bobby and I can test themes and plugins

You are welcome to join the queue in a whole line of new 'plugin testers' which have popped up this month!  Just making Oxwall even more complicated than it already is.  Proper testing should be completed before the plugin is released but that doesn't happen hear at Oxwall.

So, what we really need here are 'mini tutorials' about understanding coding which sadly looks the way we are going.  Starting from total basics.  Where to access files in cpanel, the different types of files etc.  I believe most users of Oxwall software are not actual developers/programmers and find the forums very daunting and a scary place to get problems fixed.

Ok never mind on the plugin tester :) I was only thinking a developer might need one last, fresh place to see the plugin, in the wild, so to speak. But you shine a useful light on this. It makes me realize I should stop even using the word "plugin." Those are the big dogs and I'm staying away from all that.

I'm more of a "this would look better if it were larger and moved over there..." kind of guy.
And I don't think people should have to design plugins just to put a link on a page. And I don't think they should have to design entire templates, just to change the height and color of "ow_menu_wrap."

I believe - if given a chance - if shown a mini tutorial like "how I changed my menu wrap" then the new people won't be so overwhelmed and the ones who might grow to become actual template designers, will come up through this process.

Jacq - you are exactly correct - and that is why I am thinking the way I am.
The search feature at this forum is terrible. The actual "help" is all over the place. It takes hours and sometimes days to find an answer. You may not find an answer at all. And if you ask a question, you'll get more people willing to point out that very "search process" - than people who are willing to help.
Again I say - you are exactly correct.

I don't see these things as "bad" or "flaws." I see them as growing pains.
I understand people have limited time to help. And, as a new person myself, I understand how hard it is to start manipulating oxwall to personal needs.

Jacq your feedback is excellent. I need to present my idea differently.
Perhaps I am - while still in the "thinking about it" process - better off presenting my idea this way:
I will have my own oxwall test site - but this will not matter to anyone but myself.
My oxwall test site will have a dedicated, public view, forum, for mini tutorials.
I can then respond to new people here at oxwall with "if you check my forum you will see a tutorial on how I changed my sign in page."
As other members here become acquainted with me and this would-be forum, they will grow to trust and rely on it.
And newer members will begin to respond to even newer members with "I remember when I was where you are and I found a very helpful tutorial over at so and so's [would-be] forum.

As I've stated before; I offer plugin testing to people who either want their plugin tested (for a multitude of reasons) or need their plugin tested.

While I don't think it's required for me or any of the other reviewers to write reviews the ways in which we do, but I think it is a useful feature for developers who need a professional review rather than just a "It was good, I found a bug."

Rather than doing what the average reviewer does by rating it a 5 or a 0 because of 1 or 2 problems, we do an in-depth review of every detail of the plugin and remove/add points for positive and negative features to the plugin.

@ Unique - this is excellent! EXCELLENT! Wow! I did not know you had this. It is excellent reference. I will become familiar with your topics and if I have a new one I will do a nice tutorial and I will submit it to you, for your approval. You have an amazing database of knowledge.

@ Exaspian - yes. You are doing an excellent and thorough job. There is no need for me on this. You cover it better than I ever would. Very good. You have devoted a lot of time and effort on this.

I now know more about oxwall and it's available resources. I do not think I need to start something from the ground up :)
Thank you guys! This makes things easier and more clear.
