I am learning, and I tried making some changes to a change. In the process I learned some things I had done incorrectly.  What is the best way to reinstall a theme?

Should I delete the folder off my server, then reinstall it?
Or
Will simply reinstalling it write over the old installation?

I would change to another theme temporarily to make sure that i do not mess anything up.
