Old plugins - used to be great but now rusting and outdated | Forum

As we all know,

no developer will work on other developer's plugins.. but what should we as non-tech guys do when a developer who made plugin disappeared and that asswhole is never responding..

nor oxwall allows new developers to takeover the dead-plugin project by other developers the way its allowed in elgg..

at the end.. entire eco-system is suffering..

It would be highly appreciated if you can post you views and bring this in the attention of oxwall team!!

Thanks & Regards

I think I may know of a solution...

A tool or plugin that you upload the old plugin zip and it will update that plugin to PHP 7 compliant code as much as possible, perhaps fixing just enough?

It's a difficult project, but it's not impossible actually and can start out with gradual, small changes with a compatibility matrix.

That way one Developer isn't modifying another's plugin, but instead a plugin is "Updating" a user supplied plugin zip.

Another good idea I think would be a tool to convert plugins to Chamial Plugins, I've played with a similar idea in my private fork Scene.

You can not legally modify plugins of other authors and resell them.

I do not think it's legal to sell a tool that modifies them ... at least it's not ethical.

The way is to make new plugins, based on these obsolete ones is easier.

Are enough copies of a plugin sold?

The basic problem, the hacking will continue, the licensing mechanism of the plugins is childish.

Maybe Chamial will provide a new and more evolved licensing system, if that were the case, I would dedicate my time to this new platform but I do not see clearly its business model.

Dave and I have tossed around some idea's tonight about a secure licensing system.

We think we have some idea's that would effectively work to prevent theft / piracy.

One involves encrypting plugins based on a hash function countermeasure that MUST be executed to periodically check the legitimacy and integrity of a plugin. This would be based on dynamically generated and rotating encryption keys with matching countermeasure hash functions, making it MUCH more difficult to pirate.

This would need to be put into a Fork and a new Store as Oxwall has thus far been unwilling to provide any of the Store code.

patricia, but something has to be done. there are so many dead plugins in the shop. some i bought... all don't work properly anymore. new develop /same / similar is possible, then they are much more expensive again.
Oxwall MUST do something slowly here.

Thanks for the info Chris, I wasn't sure of the legality, so I haven't modified any plugins that weren't open source on github.

Also I made some commits with pull requests to oxwall plugins on GitHub to bring them up to PHP 7, but they haven't been pulled yet.

Put the list of old plugins that you want to update, I have patched the ones that I use in my web and I can publish some, they do not seem almost anything like what they were originally.

What if it seems a pity is that you can not sell "patches" for old plugins, only new plugins.

This has a very childish failure ... If you have members suspended for bad activity that you do not delete so they do not register again, send them emails the same. As the OxWall kernel does too, I developed a patch for the kernel that does not send any emails to them, as requested by the plugin that asks for it.I already mentioned this decision to the author in 2013 when I bought it (sometimes I answered sometimes and sometimes not), and I did not answer. He made later updates that did not fix this.

Suggested Friends Widget

https://developers.oxwall.com/store/item/331

This is very stupid. The idea is very good but it is very badly done.

Always propose to the same users, it is based on that you have common friends and you are not friends.

I see the following possible improvements:

- Shuffle the results so that you do not always show them in the same order.

- Since OxWall never erases friendship requests made and if they have been accepted or rejected, you should eliminate those who have rejected a request from you, those who have not accepted it, or those who have rejected it.

- It does not take into account if it is a member that is blocked by many people and there are very heavy guys with the girls, it is not advisable to go promoting them that they already do it alone.

- Does not support the mobile version like most plugins of this author

Being this stupid plugin for sale for $ 5, I do not see interesting to improve it because it would have to be put on sale more expensive and was not going to sell. If several people commit to buy it I finish it, because I have it half done and I left it abandoned.

This means your functionality of this plugin is better, and there are many plugins which are similar with variations.. why dont you put on sale? i dont know about the tech rules.. but what i know is - you have worked on this and you deserve a reward! i will but it in 15$ right away!
