Yes it's possible to search users using my plugin.
I tested search page on your site and found that you have a javascript error on every page of your site.
That's why search don't work.
Could you deactivate social sharing plugin, i think that's solve the problem.

now when I run a user search i get a 504 gateway timeout since teh update only way to stop it is by deactivating the plugin

the issue has been resolved sorry for the late response I just updated to 1.6 and can say this is not an issue
