since upgrading the "send private message" button has gone. Users are now unable to visit another users profile and send them a private message.
Can this be looked into please?

You do not need reinstall the plugin because you will loose all uploaded covers. Just perform manual update. To do it:
1) download the plugin
2) unpack it into ow_plugins derictory with replacing of existing files
3) Go to admin panel and update the plugin

To make sure that you downloaded the latest version:
open ow_plugins/uheader/plugin.xml file, and check if the build option value is 472

When I upgraded the first time it produced a 500 internal error but appeared to have worked. Anyway I ran the update again as suggested and its working fine.
